BoneXpert is an automated software that provides an accurate and quick analysis of bone age estimation. Bone age is the skeletal and biological maturity indicator and is different from chronological age. It is commonly performed in children and young populations in the field of sports to prevent participation in the incorrect age group. It is also used to assess age in subjects with endocrinological disorders and in planning the type (surgery and/or bracing) and timing of treatment by orthodontists.
Bone age on a radiograph of the hand was previously determined manually, but with the development of deep learning software, an automated calculation is possible. The use of automated software provides a precise age estimation instead of a range, which makes it consistent for both radiologists and treating doctors. This feature also eliminates uncertainties to a considerable extent, especially in situations involving age-related decisions in medico-legal cases.
BoneXpert also has several advantages, including ease of follow-up in endocrinological disorders in children and age verification of sportspersons by sports bodies across the globe for participation in correct age group categories.
In addition, BoneXpert can be used as an alternative method for bone age estimation alongside Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the wrist. MRI is considered to be more accurate than a radiograph in assessing the actual fusion of the epiphyseal plate in the bones. There is a grading system that identifies skeletal maturity by growth plate fusion in all MRI slices.
