In this video, Dr Vikas Goswami, (Medical Oncology) Senior Consultant at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali explains about Head & Neck Cancer, its symptoms, causes, treatment and methods of diagnosis. He explains that Head & Neck Cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting Indian men and women. It’s caused by tobacco consumption, whether in the form of chewing tobacco, guthka or smoking hookah, bidi, cigarettes or even e-cigarettes. 1/3rd of Indian population suffers from Head & Neck Cancer compared to only 4-5% among developed countries. Most common symptoms are ulcers (which does not heal), change in voice, difficulty in food and water intake. According to Dr Vikas, the diagnosis is usually by simple clinical examination. It may or may not require CT Scan or MRI. The treatment of this type of cancer depends on the stage. The early stage is treated by surgery, and later stages are usually treated by radiotherapy or medication like chemotherapy or targeted therapy. He further adds that his team is fully equipped with an entire department that caters to Head and Neck malignancies and also helps to individualise (personalise) the treatment.
